Prescriptions Causing Depression Nearly 40% of Americans are At Serious Risk: And They Don't Know It

A terrifying study came out that researched over 26,000 Americans who are taking medications for medical issues that have nothing to do with emotional disorders. These medications are not used for emotional disorders, yet the patients are at a shockingly high rate of becoming depressed. Even worse, they don't know this dangerous side-effect about the medication and no one is telling them.  Even more shocking, these people (remember it's 40% of Americans) so it's likely that "these people" includes you or someone you love in your family; many of these medications also unknowingly put patients at risk for committing suicide: Suicide. In people who do not normally have depression or anxiety they are now becoming depressed or thinking about killing themselves; or sadly do kill themselves. The medication are causing these feelings. There are no warning labels on the medication.

In light of the recent very public tragedies with the suicide of Kate Spade and Anthony Bourdain, we have got to educate everyone we know and love. Medications need to be a last resort, not a first option, at all costs. When you have a health problem, see your doctor, get their advice. Unless your condition is life threatening first go see your Acupuncturist immediately after seeing your doctor.  In most cases, acupuncture can resolve your health problem with no medication or surgery.

Some of the drugs studied were seemingly benign, like the birth control pill that millions of women take daily. In addition to an increased risk of stroke and weight gain, we now know that women are at risk of becoming depressed, seriously depressed.  This is not good news.
An even more seemingly benign drug: antacids are causing depression. Antacids with potential depression adverse effects, like proton pump inhibitors and H2 antagonists, increased from 5 percent to 10 percent and patients have no idea they are risking becoming depressed and potentially killing themselves.

Please reconsider each and every medication you take. Bring your medications in to your Acupuncturist and Herbalist and have an honest conversation. Ask them if they can help you with the condition you are being treated for. Together, with your doctor who prescribed the combination of medications, we more often than not can wean you off completely and heal the problem you were seeking treatment for.

We have very effective methods of birth control that do not involve hormones or the birth control medication. Acid reflux is often treatable with acupuncture and properly prescribed herbal medicine. Please never go off any medication without the advice on how to wean by your provider.
Depression is real. Suicide is at an all time high. Pharmaceuticals may be partly to blame. The only way to avoid side-effects from a medication, is to not take it. We fully understand that sometimes you must take a medication. But if you feel something, say something. It could be the medication that is making you feel this way. If you doctor doesn't believe you and won't help you stop the medication, it's time for a new doctor.
Acupuncture can treat depression and side-effects from medication quite well. If you find you must take a medication, it may be an integrative approach that helps keep depression at bay and very well could save your life.
