Acupuncture Combats PCOS: Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome

PCOS (polycystic ovarian syndrome) feels unfair. When a woman suffers from PCOS she often has an extremely hard time losing or maintaining her weight, she rarely ovulates, if at all, and it makes infertility that much more frustrating.

Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) is a medical condition when a woman’s levels of sex hormones estrogen, progesterone , testosterone and androgens are out of balance. This leads to the growth of ovarian cysts often causing pain and the inability to ovulate.   PCOS can negatively affect the regularity of  her menstrual cycle, fertility, cardiac function, and appearance. She will often have a very difficult maintaining a healthy weight with abdominal fat being the most common, no matter what her diet and exercise looks like. Sometimes she will grow hair on her face or abdomen and is very likely to have acne.  PCOS is a complicated, frustrating endocrine imbalance that responds beautifully to acupuncture and correctly prescribed herbal medicine by a master herbalist.

After 3 failed IUI's (intra-uterine inseminations) and a failed IVF (in-vitro fertilization) this couple wanted a different approach after 3 years of struggling with their infertility and PCOS. Frustratingly, this patient was only ovulating once or twice a year on metformin, a prescription drug used to try and treat PCOS and annovulation (the inability to ovulate due to insulin resistance in the body).

After only 2 months of treatment at Eagle Acupuncture we enabled her to ovulate all on her own! No stimulation medications, no shots, no surgery and no $20,000.00 bills for this couple. All natural acupuncture, supplements, and herbal medicine,  coupled with her current medication metformin,  and her fertility enhancement was a  success after only 2 months of treatment.
This is her actual test showing her positive OPK (ovulation predictor kit)! We are so excited for her and her husband and can't wait to hear more good news!

Tics, Spams and Tourettes Acupuncture Beats Drug Therapy

Tics, Spasms and Tourettes is a frustrating medical condition that rarely gets a referral out for Acupuncture, although they all should.
For the person suffering they are embarrassing, uncontrollable, annoying and can cause serious muscular pain throughout the body, social out-casting and difficulties in school.
Traditional medical options only offer serious prescription medications that come with many undesirable side-effects that and be so intense that a person's entire personality and affect is changed.
Neuro-behavioral therapies have limited success and in the Treasure Valley charge $314 per visit for a child.
An 8 year old little boy starting having severe and uncontrollable neck twisting spasms that started out of the blue.  He was having this extremely uncomfortable twisting sensation that would violently turn his head laterally and then down to his chest.  At the onset he was having this occur once every 5-10 seconds all day long.  It would only stop once he was asleep.
His mother took him to his pediatrician and she diagnosed him as having "tics" but wanted to rule out seizures and other more serious diseases. It took months to be seen by a local neurologist so in the meantime, she sought out alternatives.
Although this family has used Chiropractic care for many ailments over the year, successfully, the treatments were making her son worse and no matter how gentle, they caused him pain.  She increased his magnesium and water intake with no obvious change.
She then had pediatric herbal medicine and acupuncture (pediatric needless tickle machine treatments) administered and this was life changing. Within a few treatments his tics had all but resolved and were much less noticable and less painful.
The neurologist (after a 5 month wait) ruled out scary diseases and said he had "tics" and would either get worse or better, only time would tell. No treatment prescribed and the doctor had no knowledge of whether acupuncture would be a good treatment option, even after reading this article she had no advice either way.

The neurobehavorial psychologist was nice and friendly but there were no noticeable changes after $2,200.00 in bills.  The family decided that service was doing nothing for their son so they stopped all together.
Now, when he has a flare of tics, he comes in for 2 acupuncture sessions and they subside. The treatment has been painless and extraordinarily successful.

Boys are three to five times more likely to have tics compared to girls and often outgrow them in adolescents but sometimes do not.  But why have your child suffer?  The discomfort can be really upsetting and the social shunning even more damaging.  If you know someone suffering from tics, spams or tourettes encourage them to seek help at Eagle Acupuncture (208) 938-1277.

*Motor Tics

Simple motor tics involve a single muscle group. Complex motor tics usually involve more than one muscle group and can even look like the person is doing the tic on purpose. Simple motor tics include:
  • nose wrinkling
  • head twitching
  • eye blinking
  • lip biting
  • facial grimacing
  • shoulder shrugging
Complex motor tics include:
  • kicking
  • skipping
  • jumping
  • mimicking movements by others
  • smelling objects

Vocal Tics

Simple vocal tics involve one simple sound. Complex vocal tics involve more meaningful speech (like words). Simple vocal tics include:
  • coughing
  • throat clearing
  • grunting
  • sniffing
  • barking
  • hissing
Complex vocal tics include:
  • repeating words and phrases
  • animal sounds
  • calling out
  • yelling

Acupuncture Boosts IVF by 65% and Prevents Miscarriage by 50%

Baby on the way! Congratulations to our couple who just found out they are expecting at our center!
Last week, when this wonderful patient came in to see us post transfer (the last stage in the IVF protocol), I felt her pulse. The ancient medical practice of pulse taking is complex and takes years to master. I felt her pulse and told her, with confidence, that she was pregnant. The blood test confirmed it later and they are indeed pregnant!

It's been a long, hard, road with many months of prepping prior to her IVF cycle with too many postponements and heartaches and losses along the way. You've waited years for good news. We know your fight isn't over yet and our treatment objective has changed from enhancing IVF to preventing miscarriage and supporting pregnancy.

Acupuncture combined with IVF has a 65% higher success rate than IVF alone. In addition, other studies show a 50% reduction in miscarriages in IVF patients who receive acupuncture before and after IVF. Yet another study has shown that acupuncture can reduce the occurrence of recurrent miscarriage in women who have experienced multiple miscarriages.
We can't wait to hear more good news to come over the next couple of weeks.
For now, rest in knowing you ARE pregnant! Congratulations!

Consultations are Available to couples throughout the United States (208) 938-1277

The Stener-Victorin electrostimulation protocol-which has been shown to reduce high uterine artery blood flow impedance, or pulsatility index (Hum. Reprod. 1996;11:1314-7)-was used for nine treatments during ovarian stimulation.

The second acupuncture technique-the Paulus protocol, which has been associated with improved pregnancy rates (Fertil. Steril. 2002;77:721-4)-

Ginger Isn't Just For Cookies Anymore: Pain Relief Better Than NSAID Drugs

Curcumin, Turmeric, Ginger, Cayenne and Lemon naturally treat pain and reduce inflammation. But who wants to take 10 different things to reduce arthritic pain, or weekend warrior recovery? Making a tea is great in theory, but palatability is a concern and the concentrated amount is tough to get in one cup. Many patients find cayenne added to a drink is far too spicy. Whereas, when compounded into pill form, is easily taken with food. Thankfully,   in one easy pill you can have it all.

Curcumin, found in turmeric,  lowers enzymes in the body that cause inflammation.  Inflammation, as we all too well know, causes pain. If you take blood thinners, these natural ingredients should be used with caution.
Ginger is not just for cookies anymore. In fact, a University of Miami study found that ginger could potentially  be a substitute to non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). The study compared the effects of a highly concentrated ginger extract to placebo in 247 patients with osteoarthritis (OA) of the knee. The ginger reduced pain and stiffness in knee joints by 40% compared to placebo.

Chronic Fatigue ME/CFS NIH Funding Finally

For our 1 million and counting ME/CFS Myalgic Encephalomyelitis, Chronic Fatigue Sydrome, SEID Systemic Exertion Intolerance Disease and Fibromyalgia patients we have good news! The NIH is finally pouring some more money into these debilitating diseases. While we keep you afloat, hopefully they will discover a cure or a viable treatment. Hang in there and in the meanwhile, we've got your back.

While we are waiting out the dreadfully long process of investigating the causes and hopefully the solutions to ME/CFS SEID and Fibromyalgia there are treatment options you usually don't hear about: Acupuncture and Herbal Medicine. But the research is booming and showing promising results. Not necessarily of a cure, but to at the very least, increase energy to improve one's quality of life. Here are astounding results everyone should know about: http://www.healthcmi.com/Acupuncture-Continuing-Education-News/1366-acupuncture-boosts-energy-for-chronic-fatigue-patients

Even more promising are these studies that are showing that Acupuncture is outperforming popular drugs to help treat chronic fatigue: https://www.verywell.com/acupuncture-for-chronic-fatigue-syndrome-715648
Moxibustion, the gentle burning of an herb called mugwort, to stimulate particular acupuncture points that increase energy, stimulate the immune modulating response and helps improve clarity of thought and reduce pain is another promising treatment Acupuncturists offer.

10 IVF's In-Vitro Fertilizations Later

Ten times is the charm for this baby boy and his family.  It's hard to believe a couple would have to endure so much just to have a baby, but they did.  Ironically many people are under the misconception that if a couple wants to have a baby they JUST need to to IVF, but in reality, it's not that always that simple.

There are set backs and thin uterine linings and misdiagnosis and chemical pregnancies and miscarriages and changing drug protocols and taking breaks along the way. All we see, as the public, is a beautiful baby and then the explanation: we did IVF.  End of story.

Most stories are more colorful and painful than that. Yet, we don't hear about them. We don't get the details, the heartache, the medical bills, the losses.  We just see the beautiful baby.

When this couple arrived at our office we did what we usually do: our very long and extensive evaluation from a Chinese Medicine Perspective. We also review from a western medical perspective, evaluating what may be a causative factor in the inability to get or stay pregnant,  as 1/3 of our 4 years in graduated school is exclusively western medicine.  If we observe something or notice testing that hasn't been done, we will encourage our patient to talk to their Reproductive Endocrinologist about a different perspective or some additional testing they may want to consider.  Sometimes, we refer out for a second opinion.  We've had the privilege of working closely with many different Reproductive Endocrinologist and learn about their varying perspectives and treatment options.

At this point in this couple's infertility journey, or nightmare some may say,  I had suspected two problems beyond the Chinese medical perspective and strongly encouraged further testing to be done BEFORE her next transfer.  I suspected two major problems that at this point, had not been diagnosed: auto-immune disorder that could be rejecting the embryos and a blood clotting disorder that either could inhibit implantation (when the baby attaches to the uterine wall) or contributing to miscarriage further down the road.

I prepped her with acupuncture and a fertility cleanse with herbal medicine to invigorate blood and help mediate the immune system and supplements too and they got pregnant with twins on their 9th IVF transfer. However, this joy only last a little while when sadly, she miscarried.  When my patient returned three months later to share the devastating news I asked her if she had gotten the testing done I suggested prior to the ninth IVF transfer and at that point, they hadn't. But, finally, after 9 failed IVF's they did get the testing I suggested. She came back for her appointment and said: you were right! I have BOTH an auto-immne problem AND blood clotting disorder.

Going into her 10th IVF she finally had a proper treatment outlined for her including blood thinners the day of her transfer and throughout her pregnancy and intralipid injection therapy monthly to help prevent her body from rejecting the embryo with weekly acupuncture treatments to prevent miscarriage and safely move blood stasis.  Here are some precious pictures of her adorable baby boy born nearly a year ago!  Congratulations to the couple and we are excited to now be helping you have success again during your 11th IVF.  Here's to baby number 2 coming along much more easily!
